TVB 1999 Calendar
Back then, the first month was seen as the most important month. It would always showcase TVB's 'Number One Brother' and 'Number One Sister'. After the success of 1997's "Old Time Buddy", Gallen and Maggie again played Lee Kei and Ching Bo Chu in "Old Time Buddy - To Catch a Thief". In 1999, Maggie also received one of the five TVB awards for the millennium's 'Most Memorable Female Leads' for her role as Ching Bo Chu (the other four were Josephine Siao's Lam Ah Chun, Liza Wang's Lok Lam in "A House Is Not a Home", Nancy Sit's Leung Yun Ho in "A Kindred Spirit", and Angie Chiu in "The Bund").
In 1998, Lawrence and Kenix starred in the series "Till When Do Us Part". Like Maggie, Lawrence also received one of the five TVB awards for the millennium's 'Most Memorable Male Leads' for Paul Ching Chi Mei in "Healing Hands" (the other four were Chow Yun Fat, Damian Lau, Andy Lau, and Dicky Cheung).
In 1998, Yu Yeung returned to TVB to film "A Kindred Spirit", playing Nancy's new love interest, Ko San Ching.
There are two main reasons why certain artistes get to be in the calendar: one, to show who is "big" in TVB; two, to show who will get promoted.
In 1999, the ratings of "A Road to Eternity" peaked at 45 points. It was also after this series that Gordon stabilized his status as a male lead.
Other than starring in two series together in 1999 ("A Man's Best Friend" and "Detective Investigation Files IV"), Louis and Jessica also won TVB's 'Favourite Male Lead' and 'Favourite Female Lead'. The ratings of "Detective Investigation Files IV" peaked at 40 points.
"A Kindred Spirit" has made Ah Hoi and Choi Yiu/Ah Gwai household names.
In 1999, Nick and Ada were not in any series together, but Nick had "Game of Deceit" aired and Ada had "A Matter of Business" aired.
Fiona and Frankie were one of the earlier fa dans and siu sangs to be on TVB's calendar. They have already appeared on the calendar in the early '90s.
"Untraceable Evidence" aired on December 22, 1997. Due to the Christmas holidays, the first week ratings were very poor; however, the second week of ratings went to an average of 33 points from an average of 27 points on its first week. The ending even peaked at 37 points. In 1999, TVB aired "Untraceable Evidence II" again during the holidays (January 4 - January 29), but still managed to peak at 41 points. Everybody was in love with Flora!
After "Secret of the Heart", Amy did not film for TVB until 2002's,"The Trust of a Lifetime". Felix, on the other hand, had four series: "Kung Fu Master from Guangdong", "Time Off", "Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain", and "Incurable Traits".
In 1999, Bobby and Esther each had their own series. Bobby's "Happy Ever After" peaked at 40 points, while Esther's "A Loving Spirit" peaked atgoo 39 points. Although they were filming "Armed Reaction II" in 1999, they managed to show up in "Anti-Crime Squad" (aired in 1999) as cameos with character names from "Taming of the Princess".

I did this all wrong. I was supposed to explain what they did in 1998 in order for them to be on 1999's calendar. Oh well!
ReplyDeleteAugust - TVB was promoting Nick and Ada for their future collaboration in Secret of the Hearts.

ReplyDeleteThis calendar was taken in 1998, so they would have already filmed "Secret of the Heart". Kelvin and Diana were already known.
