台山話

It is very interesting how different Cantonese and Taishanese are because some of the Taishanese just sounds so funny. Here is a lesson in Taishanese. The first Chinese characters are the pronunciation in Taishanese, and second set of Chinese characters is Cantonese. Have fun!

(mei) (tui) - (m) (ji) (do) - Don't know

(kek) - (kui) (dei) - Them

(foon) - (fan) - Noodle

(bu) (hao) - (tsui) - Hammer (The Taishenese must be spoken in Mandarin in order to have the correct pronunciation)

(gong) - (gong) - Talk, speak

(hek) (faan) - (sik) (faan) - Eat rice

(yiu) (sik) / (hau) (gung) - (yau) (sik) - Days off work

(ho) (hek) - (ho) (sik) - Delicious

(luk) (yi) - (ging) (chaat) - Police officer
