- Edwin Siu will play Li Xiuyuan (李修緣), which is Ji Gong's identity in the mortal world. He was originally a tutelary deity of the world. Because of some cases, he goes down into the mortal world to investigate. Later, he accidentally loses all of his memories and becomes a mortal. He goes to a village and meets a group of villagers. He is rather lively and bright. He still retains a bit of his magic powers. He and Roxanne Tong have a romantic storyline in which they complement each other; they are a bickering pair.
- Roxanne will play Su Rou (蘇柔), an iron-faced constable who is expressionless and crude. She is agile and has a tomboy personality. She is often forced into marriage by her mother, Candy Man. Later, she gains the favour of Edwin and Sammy Sum, forming a situation where two guys compete for one girl. She likes Edwin, while Sammy likes her. Her romantic storyline with Edwin is very tragic.
- Sammy will play Fang Zhipeng (方志朋), Edwin's good friend. He looks like a scholar but is actually well-versed in literary and martial skills. He uses a fan. There is a slight love triangle among him, Edwin, and Roxanne.
- Jessica Kan will play Lu Jinger (陸菁兒), a worker at an embroidery workshop. At first, she is very naive and pure. Later, she likes Edwin. In the end, love turns into hatred, and she completely changes into a different person. She goes from good to evil, as she later becomes a demon, subduing Chloe Nguyen who often bullied her. There is a scene where she seduces Edwin.
- Rebecca Chan will play 「孤姐」.
- To Yin Gor will play a little man. He is Rebecca's husband.
- Candy will play Roxanne's mother.
- Henry Lo is in a wheelchair, but he is a good fighter.
- Max Cheung will play Leng Rusong (冷如松), a lazy local magistrate who does not want to do anything. Roxanne is his niece (i.e., his sister's daughter).
- Chloe will play You Mochun (尤默春).
- Ho Yuen Tung will play Shanhang (善行), the founder of a religion.
- Tony Yee will play Dou Ding (竇丁). He is also called 「竇丁頭」.
- David Do will play Master Huiyuan (慧遠).
- Frankie Choi will play Du Rian (杜日安), a private adviser.
- Lawrence Lau will play Wang Guoli (王國立), one of the four big constables.
- Alex Yung will play a constable.
- Nicole Wan will play Zhang Jiao (張嬌), a tomboy. She is also called 「冬瓜嬌」.
- Jacquelin Ch'ng will play a troublesome wealthy woman.
- Momo Wu will play Xiang Yun (湘雲).
- Gary Tam will play Mingguang (明光), the first disciple of the religion of spirit stones. He has polite mannerisms and takes care of the followers in every possible way. He is sincerely loyal to the leader, Ho Yuen Tung. He usually does work for the leader: handling all affairs, arranging the leader's schedules, meeting with the believers, and interpreting the leader's revelations for the believers.
- Angel Chiang will play Cheng Yuping (程玉萍).
- Keith Mok will play Wen Xuan (文軒), a scholar. He is a warm guy.
- Burmie Wong will play Lee Qingzhao.
- Joan Lee will play Xiao Lan (小蘭).
- Athena Ng will play an embroiderer.
- Tiffany Ng will play an embroiderer.
- Tiffany Lam will play an embroiderer.
- Terence Siu will play Tian Jin (田斤).
- Jenny Wong will play 「孫嫂」.

Because A Smile Across the Mortal World is a historical drama. So it has the characters that aren't in cantonese.
