Acting Out a Girl Pursuing a Guy
Produced and directed by Wong Jing and Patrick Kong, "Queen of Mahjong", as the name implies, revolves around the insurance queen played by Samantha Ko, who pursues the scientist played by Kenneth Ma. The two have an affinity with each other, but she is a 'natural-born mahjong fanatic', and he hates people playing mahjong the most. Between concealing and exposing, a lot of laughs are made. Kenneth said that he is somewhat similar to the character. He said, "Rather stubborn sometimes...may be a bit absurd in the eyes of others". The biggest difference is that he has already known how to play mahjong since he was eight years old. "Because my mom really likes to play mahjong, often held me in her arms while playing mahjong. Often said that I took her tiles away, causing her to be 'shorthanded'". However, he does not have a mahjong addiction, nor does he hate it. Samantha expressed that, because her maternal grandmother really loathes other people playing mahjong, [she] never knew how to play. It was only during the New Year in Hong Kong in recent years that that she finally learned how to play mahjong. She laughingly said, "Actually learned how to play mahjong from shooting this movie. Played several consecutive nights of mahjong...am a master now".
Cannot Forget Kenneth Ma's Heartwarming Action
From the TVB series "Go! Go! Go! Operation C9" and "The QUEEN of News" to both leading the still-unaired "The Game of the Married", Kenneth and Samantha have already collaborated many times. When talking about their impressions of each other, Samantha highly praised Kenneth as being an action-style warm guy who usually does not talk much, but would observe attentively and use actions to show concern and take care of others. She shared a heartwarming experience: "I remember shooting a crying scene in 'Game' in Shenzhen recently. That scene was about me crying in the park. He was watching me in a corner. I kept crying that, after the cameras stopped rolling, [I] was still crying and could not stop, so he came over and patted my head, telling me that it was over...could calm down. He may not say it out...some subtle actions are already very warm". Kenneth, who was next to her, looked embarrassed and did not know how to respond. Samantha continued, "He has another good quality, which is often encouraging people. When you are willimg to ask him, [he] would patiently analyze. He would see the side of you doing well, hoping you give yourself more confidence".
Says That Samantha Ko Lacks Confidence
Kenneth remembers that the first time he worked with Samantha was on "Go!"; at that time, already thought that she was a very hardworking actor, but various factors could not be coordinated, so the response to the series was not great. "In the early days, everyone may have also focused on her figure. Actually, I have always thought that she is very hardworking. When encountering an opportunity to perform, would quickly rise. Filming 'QUEEN', saw her really tranform completely, and viewers discovered that she really knows how to act and is not just reliant on her appearance". Samantha said that she is also fully prepared for any role she plays. When officially filming, would always prepare different interpretations...very worried that the performance is not good enough. Kenneth responded, "She needs others' encouragement...often does not have confidence in herself. Actually, it was also like this when shooting this movie. After she had acted it out, would also ask if there was a better way".
A Vast Difference Between Movies and Television
Nevertheless, "Queen" is Kenneth's first Hong Kong movie and his first time shooting a Lunar New Year movie. He frankly said that it was an achievement unlocked. Having filmed television series for many years, he, who is shot a movie for the first time, admitted that the methods of interpretation for the two are different. He analytically said, television has many scenes that slowly progress. Movies have to be acted very precisely; plus, the screen is very big...cannot act too exaggeratedly like televison. "The movie director already uses the camera to help you speak. The television series director would not use the camera to help you...really dependent on the actors themselves. A lot of the time, we also say that shooting television series is really dependent on the actors; movies are dependent on the director".
Laughs at Himself for Not Being a Pretty Girl When Cross-Dressing
The two have played different roles. When asked what roles they still wanted to challenge, Samantha revealed that she has always had a script that she admires. "I was the president of the Chinese Society when I was in high school, so [I] frequently borrowed books from the library to read. At that time, [I] read a suspense novel, "Heaven and Hell"...finished reading it in one night. After entering the industry, met the novelist, Zita Law. Really want to make it into a movie". The story is about the male lead who, due to missing a female, pretends to live as a female during the day, but turns into an evil killer at night. Samantha is playing this female who becomes a detective. Asking if Kenneth would play the male lead, he laughingly said, "I'm scared of not being pretty enough when cross-dressing, but also interested. I often think about playing a smart villain who is very brainy and meticulous".
